The Discovery of Climbing Stairs

I have worked in kindergartens for many years and some Mums have asked me, "When the weather is cold why does my child catch a cold easily whilst wearing many clothes, why some children don‘t catch a cold or get sick even though they are wearing less clothes?" They continued, "It seems that some children who wear more clothes catch a cold more easily than the children who wear fewer clothes, why?" I tell Mums wearing as many clothes as possible is not a good way to prevent a cold, the way to prevent disease is to improve children‘s immune systems by doing regular exercise and making them stronger.

I am also a Mum and I had the same problem when my child was two. He was often sick, he coughed a lot and got bronchitis, and then he had to go to hospital. We insisted on avoiding using a drip, but he had to take an anti-inflammatory drug. I worried about his pallid face and bad appetite because of the medicine. We tried many ways to help him improve his immunity, such as taking traditional Chinese medicines, administering liquid medicine orally, and even an injection to improve his immune system, and I think many Mums have had the same experience as me.

We moved into a different apartment so we could be closer to our child‘s school, it was on the sixth floor and the apartment block happened to have no elevator. Our son had to go up and down the stairs several times every day, gradually he got sick less and less. Sometimes he caught a cold, but he recovered quicker and took fewer medicines. Some Mums said it was because he was getting older, but I think I should thankful for the stairs, which made my child exercise every day and did a much better job than climbing a mountain twice a week or taking different kinds of medicine.

The lesson to be learnt from this story is to worry less about the amount of clothes your children wear and give your children less medicine, but encourage your children to do more exercise. If you have no time to go out and exercise with them everyday please have fun with your children climbing stairs, you can chat with your children and play games like ‘wolf chases sheep‘ whilst you are both climbing. Not only does it encourage your children to exercise, but it gives you more time to communicate with them. When you exercise with your children or go up and down stairs with them hand in hand, you‘ ll find your heart is closer to their heart.
